Chapter ten

Guy laughed when he heard the story of Ellen and Mags but like Bobby he began to worry about having enough staff. As she had done in the past it was one of their livery owners, Sonia, who owned Jupiter, who came up with a suggestion.

‘There’s a young girl just leaving the school where I’m a helper,’ she told Bobby. ‘She can ride, she’s got a pony, and she’s keen to work with horses although her parents aren’t so keen, but they’d let her try doing it for a time and see if it’s really what she wants. I could ask her.’

Bobby thought it a good idea, and the girl, who was sixteen, came to see them. She was tall but light with short dark hair and a cheerful face. Guy agreed to take her as a working pupil and see how she got on. Kelly joined the staff working with Heath and Yolanda in the riding school and the pressure was slightly less.

Bobby wanted to try taking Rampant to another show and Guy said that he would come with her in case the horse panicked again. After that Hickstead’s derby meeting would be coming up and if all went well Bobby planned to go on at least two, perhaps three, of the days in the week’s show and to take most of her horses.

All seemed to have calmed down with Ellen at the moment, she was still working and living at Bracken. She said that Mags still had her horses at Jay’s but was ignoring him and complaining constantly to Darren about how her horses were being cared for.

‘Darren’s told her to move them if she isn’t satisfied but she’s enjoying making trouble,’ she told Bobby. ‘Jay’s told her they’re over, but I don’t think she believes him.’

“I just hope she’s wrong,” thought Bobby, but she kept quiet. Ellen and Jay would have to work it out for themselves.

Lisa came that week to scan Minos’s leg and said that it was healing well and Bobby asked her to scan Shelta. Bobby held her while Lisa did so and she thought again that her mare was looking smug, and she was not at all surprised when Lisa looked at her, smiling.

‘Yes, she’s taken this time,’ she said. ‘Keith Rhodes big chestnut, wasn’t it? Some mares always do better when they run with the stallion. You should get a great foal from those two.’

‘Clever girl,’ Bobby hugged Shelta who turned her head to nuzzle her. It was a great prospect if all went well, perhaps a chestnut filly and a home bred show jumper to follow its mother.

Rampant seemed un-worried by going into the lorry again. Bobby was just taking Frost with him as sensible company and he had earmuffs on and the radio playing in the back with him. She was glad to have Guy with her but they reached the show without trouble, although Rampant came out of the lorry sweating and looking tense. Bobby was unhappy to find that the thought of riding him made her stomach clench and her hands unsteady.
